This is a collection of 10 fun and interesting basic chemistry facts.

1>Chemistry is the study of matter and energy and the interactions between them. It is a physical science that is closely related to physics, which often shares the same definition.

2>Chemistry traces its roots back to the ancient study of alchemy. Chemistry and alchemy are separate now, though alchemy still is practiced today.

3>All matter is made up of the chemical elements, which are distinguished from each other by the numbers of protons they possess.

4>The chemical elements are organized in order of increasing atomic number into the periodic table. The first element in the periodic table is hydrogen.

5>Each element in the periodic table has a one or two letter symbol. The only letter in the English alphabet not used on the periodic table is J. The letter q only appears in the symbol for the placeholder name for element 114, ununquadium, which has the symbol Uuq. When element 114 is officially discovered, it will be given a new name.

6>At room temperature, there are only two liquid elements. These are bromine and mercury.

7>The IUPAC name for water, H2O, is dihydrogen monoxide.

8>Most elements are metals and most metals are silver-colored or gray. The only non-silver metals are gold and copper.

9>The discoverer of an element may give it a name. There are elements named for people (Mendelevium, Einsteinium), places (Californium, Americium) and other things.

10>Although you may consider gold to be rare, there is enough gold in the Earth's crust to cover the land surface of the planet knee-deep.

Refrigerant gas is a chemical product used in refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and heating, ventilating and air conditioning units (HVAC).  These gases, which have very low evaporation points, are condensed under pressure to chill the air.  Through a process of repeatedly evaporating and condensing the gasses, heat is pulled out of the air and the temperature inside the room or unit is reduced.  Different types of refrigerant gases include chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), perfluorocarbon (PFC), and blends made from ammonia and carbon dioxide.

The first refrigerators built from the 1800’s until the 1920’s primarily used toxic gases such as ammonia (NH3), methyl chloride (CH3Cl), and sulfur dioxide (SO2).  Unfortunately, the units occasionally leaked and caused several deaths, which prompted the refrigeration industry to put forth a concerted effort to find a safer refrigerant gas.  The result was the discovery of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gas, which was a mixture of chlorine, fluorine and carbons. Freon® became the trademark name for a CFC gas that was primarily used as a refrigerant.  This gas was colorless, odorless, nonflammable and non-toxic, and soon became the predominant refrigerant gas.

In the 1970’s, scientists discovered that when CFCs leaked into the atmosphere, a chemical change occurred as a result of exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the Sun, resulting in a greenhouse effect and depletion of the ozone.  Since that time, Freon® has been banned in many countries throughout North America and the European Union.  In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Clean Air Act established strict guidelines for the installation, repair, recovery and recycling of refrigerant gas.  The European Union (EU) has also enacted strict controls through the EU F-gas regulations.

Some applications have replaced CFCs with HCFCs, which are a mixture of hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine and carbon.  These have a shorter life when exposed to the atmosphere, resulting in less potential damage to the ozone.  Another popular refrigerant gas is HFC, which contains no chlorine and is thought to have absolutely no negative effect on the ozone.  PFCs are man-made chemicals composed of only fluorine and carbon ions, and are also considered ozone-safe.  These replacement refrigerant gases still cause environmental concerns if they leak into the atmosphere because they are considered greenhouse gases and may contribute to climate change.

Many industrial applications have moved back to naturally occurring refrigerant gas such as blends of ammonia and carbon dioxide, and research continues to search for more environmentally friendly ways to meet refrigeration needs.  Refrigeration units must also be built to specific standards and commercial applications are subject to strict monitoring.  Many countries, such as Canada, the UK, members of the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the United States require technicians who work on any units containing refrigerant gas to be licensed and certified.

Refrigeration has had a significant positive impact on life and society in the areas of nutrition, medicine, and physical comfort.  The toxic gases of the early days have been replaced by refrigerant gas which works effectively and poses no health danger.  Environmental concerns do exist regarding the use of these compounds, yet many believe that strict standards for equipment and maintenance have mitigated any negative environmental impact.

chemical facts

Chemistry is a fascinating science, full of unusual trivia! Here are some fun and interesting chemistry facts for you.
  • The only elements that are liquid at room temperature are bromine and mercury. However, you can melt gallium by holding a lump in the warmth of your hand.
  • Unlike many substances, water expands as it freezes. An ice cube takes up about 9% more volume than the water used to make it.
  • If you pour a handful of salt into a full glass of water, the water level will actually go down rather than overflowing the glass.
  • There is about 1/2 lb or 250 g of salt (NaCl) in the average adult human body.
  • A pure element can take many forms. For example, diamond and graphite both are forms of pure carbon.
  • The chemical name for water (H2O) is di hydrogen monoxide.
  • The only letter that doesn't appear on the periodic table is J.
  • Lightning strikes produce O3, which is ozone, and strengthen the ozone layer of the atmosphere.
  • The only two non-silvery metals are gold and copper.
  • Although oxygen gas is colorless, the liquid and solid forms of oxygen are blue.
  • The human body contains enough carbon to provide 'lead' (which is really graphite) for about 9,000 pencils.
  • Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, while oxygen is the most abundant element in the earth's atmosphere, crust, and oceans (about 49.5%).
  • The rarest naturally-occurring element in the earth's crust may be astatine. The entire crust appears to contain about 28 g of the element.
  • Hydrofluoric acid is so corrosive that it will dissolve glass. Although it is corrosive, hydrofluoric acid is considered to be a 'weak acid'.
  • One bucket full of water contains more atoms than there are bucketfuls of water in the Atlantic ocean.
  • Approximately 20% of the oxygen in the atmosphere was produced by the Amazon rainforest.
  • Helium balloons float because helium is lighter than air.
  • Bee stings are acidic while wasp stings are alkaline.
  • Hot peppers get their heat from a molecule called capsaicin. While the molecule acts as an irritant to mammals, including humans, birds lack the receptor responsible for the effect and are immune to the burning sensation from exposure.
  • Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide, CO2.
  • Liquid air has a bluish tint, similar to water.

POE refrigeration lubes

The stability and durability of POE refrigeration lubes are discussed. Hydrolytic
stability tests by the autoclave method were conducted at different temperatures with
hydrolytically stable POE (HSPOE, fully branched POE). The life of the HSPOE was estimated
from the Arrhenius plot. An oiliness agent was selected as an antiwear additive from antiwear
tests on a tribometer and from compressor durability tests with high side rotary compressors. In
addition to lubricity, insulation properties in hermetic motors are also needed for refrigeration
lubes for hermetic compressors. The volume resistivity and relative permittivity of the mixture
of POE and HFCs were measured, and it was confirmed that the mixture had insulation
properties equivalent to those of a mixture of mineral oil and HCFC-22. It was shown that the
moisture was effective for the resistivity of POE and HFC mixture.

In 1874 Philipp Mühsam founds an egg wholesale business in Berlin that later becomes Brenntag. In 1912 Brenntag enters into the chemical distribution business.
From the first expansion beyond Germany in 1966, through the entry into the U.S. market in the early 1970’s, to their accelerated growth worldwide throughout the past two decades, much of the growth has been enabled by selective acquisitions in key growth areas around the world.
In the eighties the company continued to expand in the USA through acquisitions of several distribution companies. In the following decade Brenntag expands within Europe through acquisitions and Joint Ventures. By acquiring Holland Chemical International, then the fifth largest chemical distributor worldwide, in 2000 Brenntag gained market shares in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and USA and became market leader in Latin America. In the following ten years the company acquired companies worldwide and therewith expanded its network and market shares. At the same time new chemical distribution centers were built at strategic locations.
The most recent milestone acquisition was the purchase in late 2008 of the distribution business of Rhodia, giving Brenntag the first distribution presence in the Asia Pacific region. In 2010 and 2011 Brenntag further expanded its market presence in the region significantly by acquiring EAC Industrial Ingredients Ltd. A/S and Zhong Yung (International) Chemical Ltd.
Since 29 March 2010 Brenntag AG (WKN A1DAHH) is listed at the German Stock Exchange in the Prime Standard Segment, since 21 June 2010 as a member of the MDAX index.
